This really does seem to be the never ending winter. I walked outside today in the snow yet again. Up at the cottage in northern Michigan the cold and snow is still in full force. I'm longing for my garden up there and for winter to be over. Thought I'd share some winter garden pictures and the garden that I hope survived this winter.
You can see the top of my garden bench sticking out, it is buried in about 3 feet of snow pack. That is not even drifted snow, just a solid blanket.
This is what I hope to restore the garden to this summer.
Winter vs. Summer |
This was a new part of the garden last year. I added lots of hydrangeas, climbing roses, clematis, petunias, snap dragons and alyssum to name a few.
Here is a winter view of the fire pit. What you can't see the fire pit? Yes it is buried under snow.
I'm hoping to sit back there again soon!
I've been invited to participate in our town's garden walk this summer so I anxious about getting the garden back in shape after this long, long winter. The frost line this winter is about 5 ft down, really extreme even for northern Michigan. I just hope the snow is gone and the ground thawed by Memorial Day, so the official planting season can begin!

Wow, you still have so much snow. We live in Ohio. It is snowing right now and going to be in the single digits tonight.....but Spring will be coming soon I hope. I hope it does for you soon. As far as the fair garden , I am putting it in front of a window for sun light and hoping I can keep it alive before it goes outside.
Laura- I could almost laugh if it didn't make me feel like crying. You have THE MOST GORGEOUS YARD!!!!! So very pretty. I am so over winter and we got more snow last night and a high of 20 degrees here today. It is just crazy! Your fire pit has disappeared!!!!
Absolutely beautiful garden! Your hydrangea are amazing - mine never have that many blooms and I have tried several varieties. Good luck with the garden walk, I'm sure your garden will look fantastic - looking forward to the pics!
Looks to me like Charlevoix has a lot of melting to do until you can get digging in the garden this year! I hope the weather turns "right" so yours will be quite lovely once again!

I hope that your garden is back to it's beautiful spring self very soon! xx
I picture heaven to look like this, sitting in the midst of it all on a cool summer morning with my cup of coffee. I hope and pray my backyard looks like yours someday. We might be in Manistee by the end of April! So excited! Anyway, this is a weird request and only if you have time, but is there some way you can label which blooms are annuals and which ones are perennials? Signed, -Brown Thumb :( (Bev)
Sighing over the garden pictures. Congrats on the garden walk invite. Angels to you!

Your garden is charming. Charming and stunning. Love the bunny tucked in the hydrangeas, and your roses are gorgeous. You really have a green thumb. Hope you'll be able to get back to gardening very soon.
Wow...your garden is beautiful...love everything but the hydrangeas are my favourite with their pastel blooms. I cannot comprehend for the life of me how a gardens survives under all that snow and blooms like that. Just gorgeous. Thank you for sharing...I loved looking at everything. HPS Michelle

Laura,
Your garden is so beautiful. I love looking at it. It is so green and groomed, and the difference between summer and winter is amazing. You have the prettiest flowers, especially those pink roses. Thank you for giving us a glimpse of your world. I know you can hardly wait for spring to arrive, but I can't help but love the wonderful snow that surrounds your home.
Have a good week ahead.

Oh, I'm having garden envy. LOVE, love your hydrangeas!
Your hydrangeas are beautiful...your whole garden is beautiful!!! It's amazing how that much snow can cover it and it rebounds back. I'm now a follower of your enchanting blog~~~
Oh, how I'd love to take a tour of your gardens, Laura! It's all picture perfect and I hope your plants survive the harsh winter. Now I want to pull out the shrubs in front of our house and fill the space with hydrangeas like you've done. I've been wanting to do it for a while, and after seeing your photos, I'm inspired to start the change. Thanks for sharing!
Laura, your gardens are always gorgeous and among my favorites! How I would love to see it in person. Can't believe how much snow you still have. That's why I love Spring so much. Just always amazes me how everything comes to life after being buried alive. lol! Hang in there friend. It will come and you will be out there enjoying it before you know it! Thanks for sharing your gorgeous gardens with SYC.
