Before and After: Bookcase

Usually my mom is the one crafting and assembling over on the Cottage side of the blog, but for once - it's me! I've recently moved again and for the first time since being in New York I have so much space that I don't know what to do with it. It's mind-boggling. To fill one of our wall spaces and make a home for tchotchkes, my new roomie and I decided to install a bookshelf. The results are below.

Before (Full disclose: It's from Ikea and somehow we managed to break off an entire section of shelf dividers during our assembly. Construction is not our forte. It required some wine after, as seen here)

After:

Ta-da! So much color and so many odds and ends. We also have tons more that have yet to stake a home on the shelf. In due time.

Now let's take closer peek.

Photography books stacked by size, as you do. I'm so excited to have a new selection of books (my roommate's) to mingle with mine.

To create a clean look we organized our books by color, then size. We have a few repeats in books.

A mix of books, colors, dishes, frames, pins and vases.

Stacking was a major theme for us, it helped break up some of the monotony of the books.

My books are all around so that you can read in passing their title. I do not bend me when I search for a specific book.
I really like that and it does look good too!

Very well done! I am one of those women who leave the construction to Mr H or son and then do the decorating... In other words they do the work and I am having the dessert... the after is a real improvement and individual! Looking forward to more! Christa

Great bookcase! I have to tell you my secret for putting together Ikea furniture: my husband! I never, ever attempt it and whenever he builds it, it lasts and lasts and lasts!

I love this transformation. I have black bookshelf that is in need of a serious new look, paint and a new back. Thanks for the inspiration!

A happy accident I think. Now you have a space to store something wide, too!
