Surfs Up in Charlevoix and Sunset

After a weekend of rain, it is partially cloudy with temperatures in the low 40's and very windy - so the surf is up on Lake Michigan. Yes, this is Lake Michigan and not one of the coasts. We like it better; no salt, no sharks. Or as we like to say, Lake Michigan: unsalted! Ok I will admit the water temperature is in the 50's, so maybe the coasts have us on that one, but not on beauty!

I've had visitors of this beach ask me what is on the other side of the lake, and I tell them: Chicago.  They will often looked puzzled and say, no really what is over there? Really Chicago. This is a huge lake.  It is the fifth largest lake in the world. Chicago is about 118 miles (190 km) across the water, as the seagull flies.

He is getting ready for take off to Chicago!

Shifting sands.

Another brave soul out in the wind and cold.

The wind was really whipping, those are four foot piles of sand covering the stairs down to the beach.

This was definitely a swim-at-your-own-risk day!

Oh the sunset pictures, they are so pretty they really deserve their own post. They may be the most beautiful fall sunset pictures I have ever taken, so stay tuned for later this week........

I am struck by how clean it is but I can feel the winter coming! The comparrisons to the ocean are great. Take me away! The waves are a little bigger than the ones on Buffalo Lake in Minnesnowta where I spent my childhood.

What beautiful pictures! Look at that blue sky and the color of the lake - what a lovely contrast. I live quite near to Lake Ontario with Canada on the "other side."

Oh dearest, THIS IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL LAKE! I live in Minneapolis, and we have fabulous lakes, but not like this one! My friend MICHELLE from Emerald Cove frequents Lake Michigan and Glencove, is it???? Well, she had pictures this summer of that lake and WOW...looked like ARUBA with its turquoise waters!

THANK YOU FOR COMING TO VISIT and trying on those coats!!!! Anita

Hi, if you didn't tell us at once that it is a lake, we will not know! It definitely looks like the sea and salted. The beach and the waves really looks like a sea or an ocean. Somehow i have the idea that lakes have different colors than the sea, maybe because we have very small lakes and rivers! I haven't seen a big lake, i just realized! hahaha. Your photos are beautiful and very vivid.

Hi Laura, what beautiful photos. My late hubby had a passion for lighthouses and I bet he visited the one you feature in your photos. I live just across the bridge from Sault, Michigan and he would travel down into Michigan quite often visiting the lighthouses. I have found you and am following you through Debbie's Newbie Party and hope to visit more often. Please drop by my blog and perhaps you will follow me too. Hugs, Chris

Good morning! Oh, thank you for becoming a follower....and you lived here once? I love Minneapolis. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, but lived most of my adult life in Boston, Mass. THE OCEAN was my front yard, literally, and we had our own private beach there, but I just adore our home here.

Well, off to work I go; have a fabulous day! Anita

Beautiful shots and colors! Reminds me of Lake Superior. Our north shore is too rocky but the south shore in WI is sandy like this. I miss it!

Fantastic photos! I live near Lake Erie - never been to Lake Michigan, but I must make it up there soon! Well...maybe I'll wait until after winter now : ) Until recently, I didn't realize that Michigan has more shoreline than any other state in the U.S.! Thanks for stopping by my blog and your comment about Kingwood Center.

Beautiful pictures! I grew up in Rochester, NY on the shore of Lake Ontario. People who don't live by the Great Lakes have no idea how big those lakes are. Love the blue of your photos! Thanks for sharing.

I'm hosting my monthly Before Blogging Throwback Thursdays party and would love it if you'd come and share something you made/did/bought sometime before blogging. Can't wait to see what you share at the party.

I've never been to lake Michigan and it really does look like the sea! So much like the beach in my own backyard here on Puget Sound. Vanna
