It's happened again: Cottage and Broome (my mother and I) have been reunited! And at the cottage, no less. I'm home for brief visit and while there will be no crafting in the few days we have together, there has been baking. The baking of a blackberry buttermilk cake. The recipe is from the latest addition of Food and Wine magazine. Click on Buttermilk Cake with Blackberries to go to the recipe.
A fairly simple and quick recipe, requiring just a few ingredients (about 10) and only 15 minutes of prep time, plus another 30 for baking, this is a perfect summertime dessert. I wouldn't even have time to get a manicure in the amount of minutes I spent in the kitchen - it was that short!

Below are a few before snaps of our pre-baked cake:
You can see we artfully arranged our berries.
We made a rookie mistake, we set the timer for 30 minutes as stated but we did not look at the cake until the timer went off, about 4 minutes over done, a little dark on top. We were busy blogging, it happens! But it did not diminish the taste, it was still moist and yummy on the inside. And of course we added real whipped cream…….
Mom say this recipe will definitely stay in the summer shortcake - berry dessert rotation. And for all you dish lovers out there the pattern is Johnson Brothers Eton.
It has been a good visit biking, reading, walking, swimming, enjoying the beach and resting.
Plus the weather has been perfect.
